Roy “Pud” Rice, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away on January 13, 2021 at the age of 86 due to complications from Covid-19.
Roy was born December 22, 1934 in Ashland, Kentucky. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth, and they spent most of their lives in Boyd County before moving to Cadiz, Kentucky 19 years ago. Roy lived a full life, and his family is proud of his many accomplishments. Roy was a 2-time World Championship skeet shooter, which paired with his career. Roy’s life in public service began in 1968 when he was employed by the Kentucky Department of Motor Vehicles. This led to Roy becoming a deputy sheriff in 1971 and, in 1973, he ran and was elected Sheriff of Boyd County. During his term as sheriff, in 1976, Roy was recruited by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) in Quantico, Virginia, where he graduated in 1977. His distinguished career in law enforcement took him to Ashland Coal where he retired as Head of Security in 1998. After retirement, he was elected County Commissioner of Boyd County from 1998 - 2002 before officially retiring to Lake Barkley with Ruth, his bass boat and favorite rod and reel.
Roy is survived by his 3 daughters and 1 son, Terri Cassell and her husband Mike of Campbellsville, KY, Billie Greer and her husband Tug of Hopkinsville, KY, Paris “Peco” Rice and his wife Sheri of Ashland, KY, and Boo Stubbs and her husband Jay of Gallatin, TN. Roy is lovingly remembered by his children, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Freda, his brother Buck, sister Nancy, and his wife Ruth Duvall Rice, who passed away in 2017.
